New Mexico Lobos - The Pit
This panoramic photo captures a New Mexico Lobos basket during their game against the San Diego State Aztecs. The Lobos led through most of the game, easily defeating the Aztecs, 62-48. The Lobos large, dedicated fan base has averaged an attendance of over 15,400 fans per game since their arena opened in 1966. The Lobos arena was nicknamed The Pit because the playing surface lies 37 feet below grade, and it is known as one of the loudest venues in college basketball. In 1999, The Pit had the distinction of being listed by Sports Illustrated as #13 in the Top 20 Sporting Venues of the 20th Century.
