The GR8 Chase is over.  On April 6, 2025, with a powerplay slapshot, at 7:26 of the second period at UBS Arena, Alex Ovechkin scored goal number 895, surpassing Wayne Gretsky’s regular season goals record.  In a monumental coincidence, he did it in exactly the same number of career games, 1487, as Gretzky.  After he scored, teammates mobbed the 39-year-old Russian to celebrate, as the crowd chanted “Ovi, Ovi, Ovi”.  To honor the NHL’s new all-time goals leader, the NHL paused the game for an on-ice ceremony that lasted over ten minutes.
